Laptop monitor height adjustment

I’ve been using a laptop for more than 10 years now – by far the most useful piece of technology I own, arguably more useful than a mobile phone. Laptops have been around for over 20 years now, but I’m yet to see one that solves the neck breaking issue of having to bend over to use it. The keyboard must be right under your fingertips, and since the screen is attached to it, you are forced to lean forward so you can read. This posture is unhealthy and ergonomically incorrect. Even if you use external mouse and keyboard, the monitor is still too low.

Here’s a solution. I hope the computer industry adopts it (or a similar one), so we don’t become hunchbacks when we’re old. This simple solution requires the screen hinges to be extensible – the monitor side of the hinges is made of two retractable metal rods, which slide into the back of the screen. When the laptop is closed, all you might see are two elongated bumps on the top side. When open, the screen height is adjustable – from where it is on all laptops today, to twice as high. The Before and After pictures below are my feeble attempt to mock it up in Photoshop.

Smartphones are next.
